The Boat

To ensure the SCIGRIP Solar Boat is as lightweight and robust as possible to compete in the Monte Carlo Cup, SCIGRIP has provided a range of structural bonding products and technical advice during the boat’s construction.

SG230: a two component, high viscosity methacrylate (MMA) adhesive that has been used to bond the largest and most demanding regions of the Solar Boat’s structure such as the bulkheads and hull joints. The product has a 10:1 mix ratio with adjustable cure rates ranging from 30 to 120 minutes.


SG5000: also a high strength, two component MMA, SG5000 adheres to a variety of materials including plastics, metals and composites. It demonstrates excellent environmental resistance, requires minimal surface preparation and with a choice of 3, 6 and 15 minute working times delivers a very rapid cure. The SCIGRIP Solar Team used SG5000 to bond the boat’s engine column and hull joints.

SG600: Used to bond the front panels and deck joints, SG600 is a high performance adhesive with a powerful and effective combination of high tensile strength, high modulus and elongation. The product can be used to assemble a range of substrates including thermoplastic and thermoset composites.

SG100: A bright white and UV resistant product, SG100 is ideal for application on visible joints such as the Solar Boat’s side floats and deck regions. This range offers excellent fatigue, impact and shock load resistance and requires very minimal surface preparation. SG100 is very easy to apply on unlevel surfaces thanks to its non-sag formulation.
